IN-PATIENT
UNIT
|
||
| The
Tapologo In-patient Unit (Hospice) opened its doors on 13 October 2004
and is a home where people who are very near to death with AIDS, and who
cannot be cared for in the home, will come to die with dignity and in
peace. The spirit of Tapologo and those working in the Hospice is one
of caring for them with love, providing an atmosphere of compassion and
caring to both patients and loved ones. The IPU affords pain and symptom control for those patients eligible for ART. This therapy can and does give these patients a second lease on life and the opportunity to regain economic activity. As an extension of the Tapologo Outreach Programme and a support service to the Tapologo ART Programme, this functional hospice facility provides: |
||
| | The necessary care for AIDS patients in the terminal phase of the disease (end of life care) | |
| | Pain and symptom relief and control for patients who need to be stabilized before starting ARV' | |
| | Respite (when bed occupancy allows) for those families who are unable to cope with the demands of their ill family member due to progressive illnesses | |
| Another
important aspect of the Hospice is community participation where the family
members and friends of the patient will be encouraged to come to the Hospice
and assist the staff to care and support the patient. The In-patient unit
was originally designed to care for 20 patients, however, due to demand,
we have had to improvise on the floor layout to accommodate another 5
beds in the form of special mother-and-child wards and end-of-life care. The existing Tapologo Administration Centre will be renovated and converted to accommodate another 10-beds that will form part of the In-patient Unit in 2007. |
